Silver City Cemetery

Lyon County

Some of the original Nevada mining history is buried in this cemetery. In the 1850's, miners began working their way up into Gold Canyon from the Carson River/ Dayton area. This was the precursor to the Mighty Comstock. And the Mighty Comstock is why Nevada became a state. Two brothers named Grosh were original prospectors in the area. Hosea Grosh died in 1857 from blood poisoning. He accidentally hit himself in the foot with a pick. He is buried in what is now the Silver City Cemetery. Remember, Nevada was seven years away from becoming a state when Grosh died in 1857. There are several pre-statehood (1864) burials in this cemetery.
