Virginia City- IOOF/ KP Cemeteries
Storey County
The Virginia City Cemetery (AKA: Silver Terrace Cemetery) is made up of several different sections. I'm not quite sure where all of the borders for these sections are. The cemetery sections include the Catholic, Firemen's, Knights of Pythias, Masonic, Odd Fellows, etc. The main entrance to the cemetery has Masonic symbolism on it. The photographs on this page are of the gravestones with Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias or symbolism other Masonic on them. A gravestone with Odd Fellows symbolism on it, for example, may not necessarily be buried in the Odd Fellows section. Most of the cemetery overview photographs are contained on the Virginia City Cemetery page. There are also a few Masons on this page. All of them were Odd Fellows as well and Odd Fellows symbols on their gravestones, so they were included on this page.
Odd Fellowship on the Comstock: the first Odd Fellows Lodge in Nevada was Wildey Lodge #1 located at Gold Hill. It was instituted on April 1, 1862. The second lodge in Nevada was Silver City Lodge #2 located at Silver City. It was instituted on April 14, 1862. The third lodge in Nevada was Mount Davidson Lodge #3 located at Virginia City. It was instituted on April 22, 1862. The fourth lodge was Carson Lodge #4 located just down the hill in Carson City. It was instituted on April 25, 1862. The sixth lodge in Nevada was Dayton Lodge #5 located at Dayton. It was instituted on June 2, 1863. Nevada Lodge #7 was located at Virginia City and instituted on January 15th, 1864. Virginia Lodge #10 was located at Virginia City and instituted on May 18, 1865. Olive Branch Lodge #12 was located at Virginia City and instituted on April 4, 1867. Parker Lodge #13 was located at Gold Hill and instituted on October 8, 1868. Odd Fellows Encampments were also established on the Comstock. Pioneer Encampment was established at Virginia City on July 17, 1864 and Piute Encampment was established at Virginia City on February 20, 1867. Today, I believe that one Odd Fellows Lodge is still meeting in Virginia City. There was obviously a restructuring of names. It goes by Virginia Lodge #1 and states that it was chartered on April 22, 1862. This would coincide with the original Mount Davidson Lodge #3.
Virginia City Knights of Pythias: Nevada Lodge #1 was the first lodge formed in Nevada on March 23, 1873. Damon Lodge #2 at Carson was formed on July 18, 1873. Mystic Lodge #3 at Gold Hill was formed on November 24, 1874. Carson Lodge #4 at Carson City was formed on December 21, 1873. Lincoln Lodge #6 at Virginia City was formed on March 29, 1874. Triumph Lodge #11 at Virginia City was formed on October 20, 1879. Lyon Lodge #12 at Dayton was formed on October 15, 1880. I do not believe that any Knights of Pythias Lodges still meet on the Comstock. The old two-story lodge still stands on B Street. It sits next to the E Clampus Vitus (ECV) and the Miner's Union Hall Buildings. In my opinion, this is one of the coolest groups of old buildings still standing in Virginia City.
